Cellulite
Cellulite - what is it anyway?
Smooth skin is very important to many people. But this ideal of beauty is often disturbed by cellulite. It is estimated that 80 to 90 percent of all women are affected by cellulite – you are not alone. In films, series and on social media, the impression is often created that celebrities would not suffer from this aesthetic flaw, but appearances are deceptive. Cellulite often appears on the thighs and buttocks. But cellulite can also spread to the abdomen. The areas of skin affected by cellulite are dimpled and look like the skin of citrus fruits. This is why we also speak of "orange peel skin".
First of all, it is important to know that cellulite is not a disease. Doctors speak of an aesthetic blemish. However, it is not dangerous. You should only do something about it if you want to fight cellulite yourself.
How does cellulite develop?
Cellulite develops in our deepest skin layer, the subcutis. This skin contains blood and lymph vessels, hair roots, nerves, glands, connective tissue and fat deposits. The subcutaneous fatty tissue protects bones and organs against impacts, offers protection against cold and provides energy reserves. But for all the benefits: fat deposits also cause cellulite.
The connective tissue is the culprit
The connective tissue that surrounds the subcutaneous fatty tissue is damaged in cellulite. This damage ensures that the connective tissue cannot hold the fatty tissue tightly enough. The small fat packages push through the loose connective tissue and the typical cellulite dimples appear. By the way: Cellulite can develop in both corpulent and thinner women. This is because everyone has subcutaneous fat tissue, which is enclosed by connective tissue.
Why are men rarely affected?
Orange peel skin is extremely rare among men. Men's skin is built up differently than women's skin. The answer here also lies in the connective tissue. Men's connective tissue strands in the subcutis are arranged diagonally and not vertically. Furthermore, men have on average less subcutaneous fat and a thicker horny layer in the epidermis. The fat chambers are therefore hardly visible in the epidermis.
