Benzoin is the natural resin of the tropical, evergreen benzoin tree. It is harvested by making incisions in the tree, which can grow up to 20 meters tall. The resin that oozes out then hardens in the air and can be collected. For many years, benzoin has been used in a variety of ways. It is employed in pharmaceuticals and dentistry as an ingredient in tinctures, in perfumery, for flavoring food, and as a pleasantly fragrant incense resin. Its warm, sweet scent makes benzoin particularly popular for the production of fragrances and personal care products.
